Post subject:  Resale of SKM software

Hi,

I am just new to this group. We are an electrical engineering firm and work on Arc Flash Study projects. Currently, we are using other consultant to perform the study for us. But we were thinking to start performing our own study. So, started looking for the software price and they are expensive, especially for high no. of buses. Are they way to save money buying resale/used license key software? has anyone purchase resale license? Is anyone interested in selling their license? Please help me if you can.

The easiest way to answer this is simply to contact them. SKM.com

Three solutions for you...
  • Some software vendors allow you to lease a product for a short period of time, which will obviously be much more affordable than buying the software outright. Contact them as Jim suggested. It's worth noting that the resale of software licenses is very likely to be prohibited.
  • Suffer the cost of buying a software product outright, but pass those costs on to your customers i.e. increase your price for doing study work to cover the outlay.
  • Research whether there are any viable open source products which would give you the tools you need to carry out studies.

The SKM packages used to be transferrable, but I think that practice ended over ten years ago.
There's a chance you could find one of them that is transferrable based on when it was sold, but I think that will be unlikely. The best way to get a package is to buy one of their combo-packs for around $5,000. Start at a 50-bus level, and then if you need more buses, you only pay the incremental cost and they release the activation codes for the software you have. There's also the annual maintenance fees that pretty much can't be avoided as new releases address issues and add features. And the software is not backwards compatible, which is to say that if I do a Study in version 8.0.2.5 and you try to open it with version 6, it won't work.
It's definitely not cheap to offer Power Studies.

Also, note that the bus definitions they use is not the typical bus definition you might be used to. EG. a distribution or panel bus is considered a bus, but also each node between equipment in series, but connected with different impedance.

Ex. example pic below from their website.

Recommend following the website to confirm, but I wanted to point this out.

As others have said, I think software licenses generally are not transferable. That being said if you haven't decided on a software package, you may want to explore the ones out there before buying. Many will let you use a demo version for a period of time, so make a model of a system in each one and see what you feel is the best for you. Also if you are going to do other types of studies such as load flow or harmonics, you should look at the capability of add on modules.

Hi, thought I'd chime in although this thread is over a year old. I'm winding down my consulting practice, and was wondering about selling my SKM software. Been using it about 15 years. I inquired with SKM, and the license is indeed transferrable provided the maintenance agreement is still active (it is). Please send me a private message if interested. Thanks.

Seeing as how it was transferrable at some point - does anyone have one they'd like to sell at this point? Please PM me if so.
