On 2006 this Petrochemical site bought 8 suits ARC100 from Oberon Company because they didnt count with the Arc Flash Studies, two years later on July 18, 2008 an Arc Flash incident happened on the MCC on Substation 2, when the electrician tries to lock the secondary switch. @LAT70E [ATTACH]216[/ATTACH] Attachment: [ATTACH]218[/ATTACH]

From the look at the suit it was only a 1-3 cal arc event. Aren't they overprotecting quite a bit? Great folks wear suits. |

Hugh, Yes, they are overprotected the reason is, even that they are the biggest Petrochemical in Mexico, like I already said "they dont have an Arc Flash Studies" till 2009, I mean, 1 year later the Arc Flash Incident. In 2006 the Electrician Manager decide bought these ARC100 and ARC140 because in various Petrochemical a lot of friends died for the same reason. We can call him as we want, but I know he is convinced that he did well. Regards, |

No issue with overprotection unless it leads to workers not adhering to to the policy. This is GOOD news! |

Over protection is great. That may or may not be the case here. I would rather see a worker put anything on than debate the need for accurate studies. We had a similar incident, guy suited up to make a 480V phase rotation check and then by mistake went probing into the 13.8kV side of the transformer. Everything was done wrong! But because he was wearing a heavy suit this was merely an terribly inconvenient, unscheduled plant shut down and not a family growing up without their dad. |

That's so right Gary. The right PPE or even the CLOSE PPE usually works. Want studies to reduce the risk and the hazard but PPE saves lives anyway. |

Just from looking at the suit above it was probably about 4-5 cal/cm2 to the worker. They didn't need 100 cal suits. Good studies can result in a LOT less PPE. No issue if it isn't worn long but this is definitely not that much energy to the worker. |
