Plant Engineering magazine has an article by Reza Tajali at Schneider Electric that provides six steps required by NFPA 70E-2012 that will improve safety. They are:
Step 1: Establish and audit an electrical safety policy with defined responsibilities
Step 2: Perform an arc flash hazard analysis and label the electrical equipment
Step 3: Provide adequate supplies of PPE and insulated tools
>Step 4: Train and retrain all workers
Step 5: Maintain equipment for personnel safety
Step 6: Develop solutions to the arc flash problem

I would like to note that the article opens with a statement that there are 300 deaths annually from arc flash. It does not state whether this is just in the U.S. or world-wide. Since the article is about NFPA 70E-2012 I assume the statistics apply to the U.S. I monitor the [url='http://blog.safe-workplace.com/2012/03/osha-fatality-report-for-april-2011.html']OSHA fatality reports[/url], and at times publish summaries in another [url='http://blog.safe-workplace.com/']safety blog[/url]. I'm finding no more than 1 or 2 arc flash fatalities a year listed by OSHA. I've been contacting authors of articles that claim bigger numbers, but have not received any replies. (I'm not finding contact information for Mr. Tajali). Injuries from arc flash are horrible, but we also need to have our facts straight. I'd like to get verification the OSHA data is correct or not. If anyone knows of other statistics, please post a comment. Thank you.
