ABB - An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

There has been an emphasis on providing increased arc flash protection for electrical personnel. Standards such as NFPA-70E require the assessment of electrical hazards and specify the PPE that must be worn to ensure safety. While certainly a positive step, safety experts rightfully argue that the best method to prevent personal injury, and to protect expensive equipment, is to go to the root of the cause. That is, address the causes of arc flash incidents in addition to the protective measures in place for workers should an incident occur.

An article in Manufacturing Engineering magazine provides an overview of the arc flash problem in MCCs and introduces ABB's MNS-MCC as a possible solution.

Fluke - Don't be a statistic

Knowing the health and history of the equipment in your facility is the first step to preventing serious incidents like arc flash. Poor connections, insulation failure, lightning, harmonics, overloading and wiring mistakes can all trigger electrical fires and other safety hazards – even arc flash incidents. The trick with detecting hazards is knowing what an abnormal reading looks like. The best solution is to gather baseline readings for especially important components and equipment:

This article then describes how Fluke Thermal imagers like the Fluke Ti30 can read the infrared energy emitted by an object and create a visible image of the object's surface temperature, warning about the potential for an arc flash.
