My opinion about the Apple Charger hype:

Two questions: 1. Do you think this is a legit claim? 2. Could this be due to the phone and/or the electrical wiring it was plugged in to?

A: A freak accident is always possible. Apple iPhone is not any different that any other device you plug in. The potential danger, however remote... it is, still exist.

Q: So no different then another cell phone, a laptop, a hair dryer, etc?

A: Nope, of course there could be an inherent defect in the charger, but it would be easily found, recalled and fixed. Remember it is a single reported incident out of hundreds of millions of phones out on the market.
If there were a rash of similar incidents numbering in the hundreds, I would be concerned. Also in China they us 220V so the insulation breakdown potential is greater there then with the 110V used in the US.
