Calgary’s Municipal Emergency Plan was deactivated by an apparent arc flash explosion last Thursday. An electrical explosion at the headquarters of Shaw Communications caused major computer network disruptions across the city.

30,000 landline telephone customers were unable to call 911 and the explosion knocked out the city’s 311 information services line. The incident also knocked out networking at Alberta Health Services (AHS). Last Friday AHS officials said the computer problems were still creating delays in the medical system in Calgary and southern Alberta. Some elective surgeries and tests had to be rescheduled, but urgent surgeries were not be affected.

The Calgary Herald reported on the disruptions to services in Alberta. People were not able to renew or register for health service cards nor driver's licenses. Issuing land transfers, police search warrants and school transcripts has come to a halt. As of last Friday many of the services were expected to be unavailable through the weekend.
